Our school takes part
in the project Sustainable wrappers "Embolcall + Sostenibles" that
pretends to offer alternative use of aluminum foil, in the breakfast wappers at school.
Maybe the biggest
problem we have in our daily lives against sustainability is the elevated
consumption of products that keep in danger nature. In Spain, a person
generates an average of 2kg of waste per day, so 14 kg per week and
approximately 726 kg per year. To be more sustainable we should reduce our
consumption. In our school, IES Ausiàs
March, we work on sustainability to do a better and greener world. So thinking about
it, we started a project.
DIAGNOSIS
Thinking about how to
reduce the waste we produce every day in our school, we realized that in the
break time for breakfast, an elevated quantity of waste such as plastic,
aluminium paper, bricks, paper... was produced. Since that moment we decided to
change it. The students of 1st
and 2nd ESO did a diagnosis and began a campaign
to raise awareness in the school. We hung a mural with images and
phrases (comic balloons) as a conversation by inviting reflection on the waste
that breakfast generates.
ALTERNATIVES
Searching more
ecological alternatives but efficient at the same time, we found an innovative
product called "Boc’n Roll".
"Boc’n Roll" is a wrapper that helps us to keep the food in place adapting itself to the
various shapes and sizes of snacks, such as sandwiches, fruits, etc. It’s
composed of cotton and polyester on the outside, and ecological, recyclable and
very resistant plastic on the inside.
PLAN OF ACTION
1.Survey and campaign
The students did a diagnosis and started a campaign for “Ausiàs Verd”. A mural has been hung in the school with sandwiches (globes of comic) simulating a conversation of two students, inviting to the reflection on the generated waste in the school.
During three random days, four voluntary students went through four classes to analyze the waste generated with our breakfast. They weighed the total generated waste and obtained information that will serve to value the project later.
2.Delivery and agreement
When we had the ecological wrappers, these were delivered to the students of 2nd of ESO first and later on to the 1stof ESO. All, of course, with an agreement of the students to use "bock’n rolls" and to eliminate plastics, aluminium paper, bricks…
We had a workshop about paper recycling. One group did a TV program about recycling, another did a survey of the different types of paper, another group recycled paper, another made a video showing how to do it andand it was a great experience because most of us had never seen it before, so we learnt a lot of things.

This is how to recycle paper:
Do you recycle? here is an interview for the TV program:
And this is the survey of the different types of paper:
HOW IS PAPER PRODUCED?
In this
activity we explain how to produce paper:
WHERE DOES
PAPER COME FROM?
Paper comes from cellulosic
fibers of the trees. Different types of paper present different characteristics.
We can classify paper into three different columns:
- Plastic packaging for food: Cartons of milk, cream, smoothies, juices, wine, broth..., bottles, cans of milk products, Polystyrene trays and boxes, of eggs; plastic cups, plates and plastic cutlery to use and carry, lids and caps, plastic, etc.
- Plastic containers for cleaning products: Plastic containers of cleaning products
- Bags and plastic and aluminum packaging: plastic food bags, aluminum bags and containers for food, plastic bags, containers of deli products, plastic wrap, transparent polyethylene film or aluminum, plastic and aluminum packagin
You can't throw:
- Organic matter, glass containers, paper and cardboard, Toys, Appliances, bottles, rubber gloves, utensils, kitchen, fruit boxes, buckets, plastic batteries
Recommendation: Clean the containers and esclafe'ls to reduce its volume before throwing them into the container.
4.Brown
In this container you must throw the organic matter, such as: food scraps, used paper towels, cork stoppers ...
5.Grey
In this container you can through everything that you can't throw in the other containers.
